Their children's program is one of the most extensive we've ever seen at a resort. It's housed in a 20, 000-square-foot space that includes a teen center called The Spot (with snack bar, video games, air hockey, etc. ) and a family Ohana Hale (with video games) along with the playroom for the keiki (5–12 years old) to hang out, but it's ultra-pricey at $125 per day—the most expensive program on the island. They also have a night camp for $95. Grand Wailea is blessed with being located on one of the finest beaches on Maui—Wailea Beach. Endless frolicking fun is yours to be had here. They have windsurfing lessons, snorkeling and boogie boarding accoutrements for rent and scuba lessons. The latter take place in their dedicated scuba pool, which is 10 feet deep and lined with sea critter tiles. They also have indoor racquetball and basketball in the fitness center along with fitness classes (for a fee). The day spa, like everything else here, is huge and busy. Every bone-melting treatment that the human race has created seems available here for every member of the family.

Grand Wailea is indeed one of the largest resorts on Maui. They took every dream and whim that the designers could come up with and sprinkled in a half billion dollars or so (give or take a hundred million—I mean, who's counting when it gets that high? ). The result is an outrageous, exotic tropical playground. When you drive up, you are greeted by a waterfall that would look natural along the road to Hana. (In fact, one of the tour companies shows this waterfall in their jungle tour of Hana brochure—shame on them. ) Once you've checked in, you just gotta check out the pools. Imagine nine interconnected pools with a current running between many of them. Waterslides, Tarzan rope swings, rapids to shoot, a sandy baby beach portion, and a swim-up bar. This pool is wildly popular, and you'll be forgiven if you sometimes wonder if everyone staying at the resort has decided to hang out at the pool for the day (quiet, it ain't, even at the adult pool).
From Washington, D. C., it was quite a long day to finally make it to the resort. While United Airlines does offer a non-stop flight from Dulles (IAD) to Maui's Kahului Airport, my flight connected through Los Angeles (LAX), which meant an early morning departure from D. C., five-hour layover in Los Angeles and then another relatively long flight to Maui. I landed around 6 p. m., and, after a 30-minute drive, arrived at the lush and welcoming resort. Check-in was quick and smooth and, after getting a brief primer on the layout of the resort, I made the short trek across the gorgeous property to my room. My ocean-view room offered an amazing view of the palm trees and the Pacific Ocean beyond, both of which seemed to change color every few minutes as the sun rose and set in the sky. My large private balcony was the perfect perch to enjoy coffee and breakfast in the morning and a glass of wine before sunset. The room was also equipped with a Keurig coffeemaker, mini-refrigerator, 55-inch HD television, safe and the rest of the amenities you would expect from a Waldorf Astoria property.

"Grand" is no exaggeration for this opulent, sunny 40-acre resort—either astounding or over the top, depending on your point of view—that's wildly entertaining due to its elaborate water features such as a "canyon riverpool" with enclosed "lava tube, " slides, caves, a Tarzan swing, and a water elevator. The chairs are very tightly packed around all the pools. Speaking of chairs, if you rent the cabanas at the pool, it costs $250–$1, 250 per day —among t he most expensive in all of Hawaii in peak season. And you should reserve it in advance. But hey, they sure do pamper you. They'll serve you water, popsicles and fruit. We think at that price they should at least include a personal masseuse. Casabella chairs are $50–$300 per day by the pool and on the lawn by the beach. At least the umbrellas and chairs are free. The 40 acres of grounds do hide lots of nooks and crannies where one can find some privacy. They are more smoker-friendly, in that the areas where you can smoke feel less like a punishment and more like a pleasant spot to enjoy a cigar. Over $30 million worth of art—some beautiful, some bizarre—adorns the grounds and lobby. Countless shops are here, mostly upscale. They have numerous restaurants. Wedding services here are extensive. They host gobs of weddings each year, and their chapel is utterly gorgeous.

I never got a call. If you can't get a spot or want a relaxing break from the sand (or just need to escape the squeals of delight at the activity pool), the 4, 850-square-foot Hibiscus Pool is reserved for guests 18 and older and offers a tranquil environment. Dining options include signature restaurant Humuhumunukunukuapuaa, named for the state fish and blessedly referred to as Humu for short, comprising thatched huts set atop a man-made lagoon overlooking fountains and water features. Executive Chef Michael Lofaro's dishes use fresh local seafood and other ingredients, like hamachi carpaccio and crispy mahi mahi; all are perfect with a Maui-made sparkling rosé or tart and tropical mai tai. My favorite meal was at Bistro Molokini, the more casual beachfront restaurant, where, on my first night, I noshed on togarashi-seasoned ahi with baby bok choy, charred scallions, coconut broth, mushrooms and papaya — so many of my favorite ingredients on one plate. Though I didn't get to experience it firsthand, Spa Grande lives up to its name with 40 treatment rooms housed in a 50, 000-square-foot spa — the largest one in Hawai'i.

I could lounge on the sofa or work at my desk and still enjoy the view — though, admittedly, it was difficult to do either as I wanted to be on the beach non-stop. I'm often not a fan of really large resorts, but the Grand Wailea is laid out thoughtfully and feels manageable, not massive. Though kids and families may cite the sprawling Wailea Canyon Activity Pool — with waterslides, rapids, a rope swing — as the resort's biggest draw (and it is pretty cool), but, in my opinion, its more unforgettable highlight is Wailea Beach. Rated one of the best beaches in Maui and one of the top in the world, it's sandy, inviting and free from rocks, coral and seaweed. Perhaps the best part is use of chairs and umbrellas are free of charge for hotel guests. One caveat, though: The Grand Wailea is one of those resorts where everyone seems to claim chairs and then head to breakfast. If you don't queue up by 7 or 7:30 a. m. at the rental cabana, you'll end up being chair-less and disappointed. I arrived at 8:05 a. the first morning and was told they were out of chairs and they would call me when they got some back.
The rooms are nothing special when compared to other resorts in Wailea, but they have what you need. They have what we call a "close family fee. " If you want to use that door connecting adjacent rooms, it's $50 per night. (Ridiculous but true. ) They say it will guarantee you a connecting room. We've been to this resort a number of times over the years, and though we've liked it a bit less each time, the staff seem to have improved on this visit. Still, we found it felt more like a visitor-processing machine than a warm, welcoming resort. Grand Wailea can feel like Disneyland on the beach. It's one of those places where you can hang out at the resort and stay entertained for days. (Which, of course, we hope you won't do. ) What's the catch? Wadayatink? Rooms (640–715 sq. ft. ) are $399–$999. Suites (1, 300–5, 500 sq. ) start at $1, 000 and go up to the Grand Suite, which used to be more expensive, but now will only set you back a mere $7, 500. (For that price, I wonder if they allow you to steal all the towels you can carry. )
Treatments use amenities like a hydrotherapy circuit, Roman tub, saunas, cascading waterfalls, Swiss jet showers, Japanese furo and five specialty baths in an extensive menu of massage, facial and body care experiences. Don't miss The Grotto, a swim-up bar tucked in a cave adjacent to some of the waterslides and activities pool. My friends and I belied up to the bar and spent several delightful hours one afternoon sipping tropical tipples like a well-made piña colada with dark rum. It was so hard to leave my barstool. The resort employs a Hawai'ian cultural ambassador, Kainoa Horcajo, who makes sure all landscaping, architecture and decorative accents are authentic and true to the Polynesian culture. He also gives tours of the property so you can learn about Hawai'ian history and the resort's flora and fauna. (Remember to ask him about the bad luck associated with taking rocks or sand home. ) The resort offers activities like beach yoga, scuba lessons, kayaks and snorkeling that add to your Hawai'ian experience.
